Glenglassaugh 40 Year Old Sherry Cask Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Woolf Sung whisky review

let’s begin

It is not every day you get to try a Glenglassaugh 40 Year Old Sherry cask, especially not from Woolf Sung, new independent bottlers, who have released this, their first bottling called 'The Hunter'. Only 160 bottles will be available with an RRP of £950.00.

To introduce Woolf Sung:

Woolf Sung provides rare access to the finest products in the world. Its service is bespoke to individual requirements but its approach is friendly and fun.

The Woolf Sung Collection is a unique series of the rarest whiskies on the planet. The concept was created to shake up the industry norm of wooden cases and standard tall bottles along with, in our opinion, some not so nice whiskies at extremely high retail prices.

Only the very best whiskies are selected by us for the Woolf Sung Collection bottlings paying homage to the world’s greatest distilleries. Each release has its own unique label design that will not be found on any bottle except those of the collection. Bottle numbers are extremely limited on each release.

And what about The Hunter then?

The Hunter is the first release from the Woolf Sung Collection. It is a Glenglassaugh 40 year old distilled in December 1972 and decanted in January 2013 from a sherry cask. The whisky has a cask strength of 42.9% and comes in a 70cl bottle.

The label is a one of a kind design and each label is hand numbered.  It is beautifully presented in a stainless steel black powder coated bank vault case. Each case is embossed with Woolf Sung’s unique release number. Only 160 bottles have been produced of this wonderful whisky.

And how did I get on with the whisky itself when I tried it?

On the nose I was getting wisps of smoke, cherries, sandalwood, sweetness but refined sweetness, toffee crisp, burnt MDF, so refined with a bitter dark chocolate note after a while.

The palate was creamy with sumptuous dark fruit notes, so viscous with lots of chocolate notes, wow, that old school smoke with a solid cherry character is strong. Hints of banana and rum and raisin like fudge, maybe even some exotic fruits such as pineapple and coconut juice, not the fruit but the juice of both. Remarkable. Medium spicy finish that stings with cayenne and freshly ground pink peppercorns.

All in all the Glenglassaugh 40 Year Old is a fantastic whisky, in a truly stunning bottle and pack, really nice work guys, beautiful – like a piece of art that tastes amazing.

  1. Hi Greg, you are certainly aware that this Bottling of “The Hunter” comes from Sherry Cask R13/08/01, the same cask as the Carn Mor 1972 release, a Whisky which is sold for about 300€? So a customer will pay 700€ extra just for a fancy packaging! “Good Marketing”, isn´t it?
