Glenmorangie 18 Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review

let’s begin

Tucked away in to the Highlands of Scotland since 1843, Glenmorangie is an independently owned distillery that has a varied and full-bodied range.

It is based just outside the historic town of Tain, which is Scotland’s oldest Royal burgh.  It is a big part of the community here and entrusts the distilling of its malts to the Men of Tain with pride.

The distillery shares its estate with Glenmorangie House.  This is a 17th century house that is open to guests and a great place to stay if you are looking for a place to really soak up the Highlands (and plenty of Glenmorangie as well).

Part of the distillery’s impressive range is an 18-Year-Old single malt that has been matured in white American oak barrels for fifteen years Then 30% of the liquid is transferred to Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, where it is finished for three years.

Once both elements have reached 18 years, they are blended back together and the result is pretty impressive.

On the nose the Glenmorangie 18 Year old is refined, with a full body of manuka honey and dried fruits.  There is an undertone of floral notes that give it a warming aromatic feel.

This expression is like walking through a blossoming orchard with the sun beating down and bees buzzing.  It is refreshing and the floral notes combine with a wooded quality to evoke a summer’s stroll.

The honey gives it depth and sophistication with a smooth sweetness.

This is reflected on the palate in the thick and smooth mouth feel.  The honey is combined with more dried fruits, this time in the form of dates and figs.

There give a nice tang to the soft honey and subtle floral notes.  The blossom of the nose is fully realised on the palate the orchard creeps back into view.

Underneath it all is a dull wood smoke that remains in the background.  It offers a nice comparison to the fruit, floral flavours.

The 18 Year Old has a strong finish that is filled with oak and fruit tones.  These melt together to create a perfect ending.

Bottle cost: £81.95
