Iconic whisky bar experiences series: MASH London

let’s begin

I have a confession to make; despite being a devout born and bred Londoner, I rarely get around to checking out the iconic and best cocktail bars in this great city, this series of articles aims to readdress that. This week's featured bar is MASH London.

Mash London is a modern American steakhouse located near Piccadilly Circus, Central London built on an ethos of delivering the real American steak house tradition of massive steaks from the best cattle in the world.

When you see the restaurant on Brewer Street it just looks like an American diner but once you enter you are immersed into an elegant steak house that invites you into the inner sanctum down a somewhat over-the-top spiral staircase.

Once underground the space just opens up into a vast emporium that celebrates the bar as much as it celebrates beef with extraordinary meat lockers showcasing their select cuts. The whole place as been designed with art deco glory in mind, and centres around the original design work of 1930s art deco artist Oliver Bernard.

They describe their bar thus:

“Our breathtaking bar houses a spirit selection that’s truly out of the ordinary. We select only the finest American spirits, and offer an extensive range of bourbon, rye and US spirits, all of which work perfectly in our bespoke cocktails. We believe we have the best selection of American bourbon in the UK.”

Having met senior mixologist Troles at the Wild Turkey Cocktail Competition not too long ago I trusted him to create some incredible off book cocktails that would blow my mind. And wow did he deliver.

My wife and our friend Sarah were enjoying espresso martinis and sherbet coated fruity numbers, all of which were fantastic, whilst Troles concocted a different bourbon whisky-based cocktail each time with the theatre you’d expect from one of the top mixologists in the UK.

We even tried the Old Van Winkle 107 proof straight bourbon aged ten year which packed a punch.

All of the cocktails were simply incredible, pushing boundaries of flavour profiles and testing my ability to ever enjoy another cocktail anywhere else again.

See the photos for the brilliant liquids we enjoyed, but one of the best elements of the experience was when I clocked Troles watching my first sip of one of the cocktails, saw my smile and punched the air with delight at seeing his hard work rewarded by a happy punter.
