Kavalan 2007 Peaty Cask #029 Single Malt Whisky, £150

let’s begin

Kavalan Distillery is the only Whisky distillery in Taiwan, and has made a massive impression on the global Whisky industry.

They have been around since 2005, with their first release coming out in 2008. The hot and humid climate of Taiwan means that despite the relative youth of their malt, the quality of the maturation is the same as many Scotches.

Kavalan are an award winning distillery, having been named Jim Murray’s New World Whisky of the Year in 2012 and World’s Best Single Malt Whisky at the World Whisky Awards in 2015.

This is just an idea of how well they have done, especially considering how young they are.

They tend to have a fruity flavour profile, with lots of exotic fruits such as mango and pineapple, but with the release of their Peaty Cask, they have embraced a new flavour.

This was once only available at the distillery itself but has now been released to specific retailers.

To get that peated flavour, this expression has been matured for nine years in casks that once held Islay Whisky.

It opens with a nose of sweet fruits and syrup. It is thick and rich, with a lovely zesty tang to it.

The Peaty Cask has the nose of a typical Kavalan release, with lots of citrus and saccharine, exotic fruits, and a lovely smooth vanilla. Underneath all of this is the tell tale dull waft of peat.

This gives an extra level of intrigue to the dram and ties in perfectly with the fruits. The smoke weaves itself around them and ties everything up wonderfully.

The palate is equally as fruity, with lots of pineapple, bananas and mangoes. There is also a lovely vanilla and oak wood touch that really gives it depth refinement.

The peat adds a lovely thick smoke to the palate. It is rich and pungent, but still allows the other flavours to breathe.

It goes especially well with the spices that also appear on the palate. These include cinnamon and nutmeg, and they are warming and soft.

They especially add to the finish, where they intermingle with the oak wood and make for a complex end to a very fine Whisky so head over to The Whisky Exchange and pick one up for yourself for £150.

  1. Nice to read a review of a Kavalan whisky – I went to visit the distillery last year and was quite impressed by the site :-). Also managed to take a few bottles home with me of course and one of my choices was the peaty one which is quite unusual compared to their other whiskies.
