Flashblog: Littlemill 25 Year Old Private Cellar Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky

let’s begin

A flashblog is where quite a few bloggers all review the same whisky and publish our reviews on the same day creating a buzz and starting conversations with whisky lovers the world over.

This is the first I have had the privilege to take part in and what a treat, the Littlemill 25 Year Old Private Cellar Edition, there will be only 1,500 bottles retailing at around £2,000 with each being accompanied by a piece of the cask and a miniature… what a treat.

Littlemill itself is a closed lowland distillery, long gone and much missed since shutting its doors in 1994 after 218 years of on and off production making it Scotland’s oldest distillery at the time. Since then, the spirit distilled at this history-laden distillery has turned out some spectacular releases over the years through indie bottlers Cadenheads in particular.

Over the years the distillery dabbled in triple distillation and even used aluminium insulation in their rectifying columns to attempt to produce whisky that would mature faster – interesting.

Sadly the distillery was dismantled in 1996, with a fire destroying the remnants of the site in 2004.

This release is a vatting of ten casks distilled between 1989 and 1990 that were matured in both American and European oak, once vatted the whisky has been finished in Oloroso sherry casks, this is the top tier premium release from this long lost distillery.

Bottled at 50.4%, this is a pleasure to taste and to review.

Nose: Spicy ginger, dried fruits, wisp of orange, cinnamon

Palate: Very thick yet delicate sherry palate, white pepper, Christmas cake, dried fruits, chocolate orange (not Terry’s, mine!)

Finish: Medium, creamy with lots of indulgent spices

Overall this whisky is ace, really nice and enjoyable – doubt I will get to try it again given the price point (which is quite high in my opinion) and the obvious limited availability but am glad to have been part of this flash blog… make sure you see what everyone else thought too:
