Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky Review

let’s begin

Johnnie Walker is the biggest selling blend across the globe; they maintain their success by never compromising on quality and by being accessible to everyone, and no Truer words can be said of their Johnnie Walker Gold Label.

Their Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve, sent to me by Dr. Jim Beverage their Master Blender in celebration of it winning best blended Scotch in the whisky awards this year, is a celebration of different flavour regions and a luxurious but affordable expression with lots of character.

The Brand

Johnnie Walker have been about since the mid-1800s and was first born inside a grocery store owned by John Walker. Since then it has become probably the best-known and certainly the biggest selling blended Scotch in the world and has a wide range of bottlings to attract every type of buyer.

Part of what makes Johnnie Walker so popular is the fact that they are inexpensive yet good. The quality is clear and they create drams that everyone can enjoy, form the novice to the connoisseur. They are well-known for their Johnnie Walker Red Label and Green Label, some of the most popular Scotches around the world.

Bottle cost: £43.45

The Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve is described as “the perfect blend for an indulgent celebration”.

It is a combination of several of the brand’s distilleries from Speyside and the Highlands, with the main focus on Clynelish and has been created by Master Blender Jim Beveridge.

This blend has won several awards including a total of four Double Golds at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and four Le Monde Selection Grand Golds.

It opens with a nose of fresh herbs and oak wood, giving it a distinctly earthy note. This becomes sweeter with the introduction of honey and caramel. There is a gentle spice as well, with nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon all appearing, making it quite complex.

The palate is gentle, with lots more honey and herbs. The oak wood grows into vanilla, with a warming note from the spices. The body is robust and has a lot of character. the honey and caramel of the nose lend a mellow and smooth mouth feel.

More floral notes and a hint of fresh apples round up the oak notes, adding to the earthy quality of the dram.

The finish is bold and beautiful. It has lots more honey and oak wood, with a subtle spice wrapping it all up.

This dram was made with celebrations in mind and it does not disappoint. Don’t even wait for your next birthday, just grab a bottle now.

  1. I have yet to sample a Johnny Walker whisky that is any value compared to whisky available at same price. Does not matter what label is on the bottle there is always a far better whisky available at a cheaper price. I think it is an over rated whisky that sells due to its marketing stradedgy not it quality.
