Getting geared up for World Whisky Day 2014

let’s begin

Now in its third year, on May 17 2014 the whisky community will come together to celebrate and raise a dram to World Whisky Day.

There’s a chance you’re not familiar with this recent addition to the annual celebrations of the water of life (side note; the word whisky is an anglicisation of the Gaelic word uisce/uisge meaning water. Distilled alcohol was known in Latin as aqua vitae meaning “water of life”) so if not, this post is for you.

World Whisky Day was founded by Blair Bowman when he was a student at the University of Aberdeen a couple of years ago where he spotted a gap in appreciation for whisky where other spirits, products and ideas already had a designated day of celebration in the calendar.

When launched, the BBC interviewed Blair about his motivation to make this all happen:

“I’m hoping that it allows more people to become interested in whisky and could also boost tourism for Scotland. Whisky is booming right now, all over the world. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this famous Scottish export.”

There will be hundreds of events all over Scotland and the world, WorldWhiskyDay.com will help you find your nearest.

On WorldWhiskyDay.com they explain the ethos behind the day as:

“World Whisky Day is all about making whisky fun and enjoyable. We are not about being snobby and you can drink it however you enjoy it. We want to be all inclusive that means any kind of whisky/whiskey from anywhere in the world. We also want to encourage you to drink your whisky/whiskey the way you enjoy it most.”

Go forth and raise a dram both to whisky itself and Blair for creating such a great celebration of something we all hold so dear. I will be at the London Whisky Weekender taking part in all manner of tastings, let me know if you’ll be there, would be good to say both hi and slàinte.

Just for good measure, and to help those of you out who occasionally wonder about these things, here is a video explaining how to pronounce slàinte.
